Tips on How to Perform Basic Drywall Repair

Had a Slight Accident with Your Drywall?

Drywall is the popular construction material for walls and ceilings. It is quite easy to install and can last for many years when properly maintained. But, there are sometimes problems with holes or mildew, which will need some minor attention to restore the look of the finished drywall. Below are a few help basic tips on how to perform drywall repair.

One of the more common maintenance issues regarding drywall is patching holes. When a hole is minor, as with the case of nail holes, it does not take much effort to repair them. Minute holes of this kind can be patched easily using white toothpaste. Only a small amount will be needed to patch a hole. Plus, as an added bonus, toothpaste does dry extremely fast and is able to be painted over to blend in with the rest of the wall. This basic repair can be performing in a matter of minutes, and the cost is very little.

However, when repairing a hole that is bigger, it will be necessary to use a joint compound, this will provide a more effective patch. This compound is sometimes known as mud, it can be used to fill in holes and blend in with the surrounding drywall. However, it is recommended that you first spray some water onto the section which requires drywall repair. This helps to adhere the mud properly to the drywall, in addition to being easier to buff up the patch so it will blend in more with the wall.

Once the compound is dry, lightly sand the patched area, this will remove any minor imperfections and make it ready to paint over. While it does take slightly longer to repair these drywall issues than the toothpaste method, it can still be done in a relatively short amount of time. However, for much larger holes, a professional drywall contractor should be called in.
